PERU

Surface area

With an area of 1,285,215 square km, Peru is the third-largest country in South America after Brazil and Argentina, ranking it amongst the world's 20 largest nations. Peru also holds sway over the sea up to 200 miles from the Peruvian coast and has territorial rights to an area of 60 million hectares in the Antarctic. Peru is divided into 24 departments, plus the Constitutional Province of Callao. Lima is the capital of Peru.

There are three natural regions:

• Coast,

The coastal region, where Lima is located, is a narrow coastal plain mainly deserted and crossed by fertile valleys. Agricultural plantations, such as cotton, sugar-cane and rice, are located here as well as the majority of oil explotations in the country.

• The Highlands,

The highlands, part of the Andean Mountain Range, has some peaks above 6000 metres of altitude. The mineral resources of the country, such as silver, zinc, iron, copper and gold are located in this area as well as the main part of the cattle. The jungle, is a zone of high fertile lands, of subtropical type.

• The Montaña and the Amazon basin,

The Amazon jungle is located on the eastern side of Peru. It has a great number of natural resources. However, the lack of communication and transport infrastructure made this region not to be exploited during the 70's. In 1973 the oil extraction started on a large scale. The population of Peru is a mixture of indians, mestizos and descendents of the Spanish colonists, in addition there are Chinese and African communities.
