The name of OXAPAMPA, comes from quechua “Ocsha”, that means “straw” together with “Pampas” (straw Pampas).






 

 


General performances

History of Oxapampa

Lived initially by Yanesha, Ashaninka and Lorenzos; from century XV the Andeans descend to the zone of Huancabamba, the white man (Spanish), appear as of 1570, think that franciscanos priests crosses for the first time the Mountain of the Yanachaga; in 1635 priest Jerónimo Jiménez crosses Huancabamba, follows others and settles down great properties in this place, all were destroyed during the rebellion of Juan Santos Atahuallpa (1743-1755); the Spanish returns as of 1776.
In 1859, arrived group of German people in Pozuzo.At the time of the rubber many foreigners arrived at the Low Forest and after World War II then arrived the Yugoslavs at the city of Oxapampa.
 
Until the creation of the city of Oxapampa and later arrival of the highway in 1944 the developed zone more was Huancabamba because the greater communication with the outside was made by this zone. The franciscanos missionaries from century XVI have influenced in the formation of diverse towns in the province. Nevertheless, from century XIX they are considered like promoters of the Cardinal red colonization to Jose Rufino (Huancabamba), Jose Egg (Pozuzo), Enrique Bottger (Oxapampa), Guillermo Frantzen (Iscozacin), Leopoldo Krause (Villa Rica).

Geographic location

The department is located in the central Andean part of the national territory, including Andean zones and amazonian forest. The District of Oxapampa, is located in the right margin of Chorobamba river in the central and Eastern part of Pasco Region, between the geographical coordinateses 10°35'25 " of South Latitude and 75°23'55 " of West longitude of the meridian of Greenwich. Demographic aspects According to information of the Institute of Statistic and Computer science (INEI - 2002), the district of Oxapampa counted until 2002 with an approximated population of 12 826 inhabitants. At the present time an approximated population of 15 700 inhabitants.

Surface
The surface of the district of Oxapampa is of 982,04 km2 (3,52 hab/km2), the river basin of Oxapampa has an approximated extension of 2508,78 km2
Limits
The district of Oxapampa limits by the north with the district of Huancabamba by the south with the District of San Luis de Shuaro, by the east with the districts of Palcazú and Villa Rica and by the west with the district of Chontabamba.
Altitude
The city of Oxapampa, is to 1814 m.s.n.m varying the 000 heights of 1 m.s.n.m. (Paucartambo Bridge) until 2300 m.s.n.m. (PNYCh) approximately.
Climate
Humid and semi warm, with temperatures average of 15°C to 25°C and precipitations of 1500 to 2000 mm

Population
German colony located 396 km from Lima, was founded by Mr. Enrique Böttger Treu (30 of August of 1891),ancestrally it was lived by native yaneshas that denominated “Mon Konma” whose meaning is “Plain of reed or pajonal”, Their food and people are wonderful. At the moment the province of Oxapampa has great economic hopes for the same reason of the potential of natural resources, its geocentric location and the kindness of its fertile earth and still more being propitious for a great tourist affluence by its attractive and beauty.

Information
From Lima to Oxapampa you can take 12 hours and is good transport service for that place. Shelters and houses exist lodgings. That is the best thing of Oxapampa and Pozuzo, where you can live the tradition and culture on a direct form because the settlers have opened their old houses for the visitors. And they are quite comfortable.

Routes :
You can go by Executive bus From Lima to La Merced, then by Vans from this point to Oxapampa and Pozuzo.
You can take express routes taxis or express aerotaxis.
