Breakfast. Departure: 9 a.m. Having strengthened our legs during the first two days, we are now ready for a visit to this enchanted forest, a 1- 1/2 hour hike for the expert and 2- ½ hour for the untrained. We will climb up 400 m. through rugged terrain, arriving at a Pampa donned with over 11,000 hectares of virgin forest. We will cover an approximate area of 4 hectares with the help of qualified guides. During the climb, we will run into one of the matapalos (ficus ssp.), a 30 m. high, 4 m. wide tree, it is a giant, parasite tree, native of the jungle.
PAMPA HERMOSA offers a treasure of virgin flora, including a wide variety of orchids, some of which have not yet been classified. Varieties of “heliconias”, ferns, palm trees and other spectacular plants of the “bromeliáceas”, “ericáceas and “aráceas” families propagate and adorn the forests. The region is blessed with over 280 varieties of plants, per hectare. Among these are 35 m. tall, 4 m. wide cedars, walnut trees, “lauráceas”, 20 m. tall wax palms, “líquenes”, climbing plants and huge ferns of prehistoric origin. In summary, a plant paradise that offers unmatched senic hikes under its shaded canopy. The cedar trees (“Cedrela cf. Odorata) of Pampa Hermosa represent a genetic bank of great importance to the area – the Amazonian forest is facing savage decimation. Dominant among the cedars is “Abuelo” (Grandfather), the largest in Latin America, estimated to be 600 years old.
Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

6th day:  SAN RAMON – LIMA

Evening Activities:
Bar, bonfires, table games, watching the nocturnal butterflies and enjoying the starry nights. Bring a flashlight.
Weather
The area is humid, surrounded by waterfalls in a narrow valley between high mountains (1200 mts. above sea level). Weather is mild and pleasant throughout the year. During the Summer the temperature reaches a maximum of 30 deg. C (86 deg. F) during the day and no lower than 15 deg. C (59 deg. F) at night (showers expected from Dec - April ). From April through December, daytime temperatures reach a maximum of 28 deg. C (82 deg. F) and go no lower than 11 deg C (52 deg F) at night.

ATRACTIONS
Blessed with lush vegetation, the area is home to a variety of colorful birds, mammals, rodents, etc. It is surrounded by canyons, fresh water springs and clear creeks. Scenic views include the Ulcumayo River and over ten beautiful waterfalls that rush down between huge trees (it is possible to take a dip at the bottom of some of the waterfalls). These are only some of the many unique attractions that await nature lovers. A 20-minute hike will take you to the ancient, stone formations of the Puente Chávez and to the “Danzadero del Gallito de las Rocas” (The Dancing Site of the Little Rooster of the Rocks) – it is actually a bird with a red crest resembling a rooster’s. Hikers in good shape can take a 1½ hour hike to visit the Pampa Hermosa Reserve; those who choose a more leisurely pace, can expect a 2 ½ hour walk.
Ninabamba, a highland village at 2,000 m. above sea level, is located in a prairie bordered by the Andes and the lush vegetation of the “Ceja de Selva” (Jungle high slopes). It can be reached after a 4-5 hour hike, depending on the guest’s physical prowess.

FLORA AND FAUNA
Richness and variety characterize the Reserve’s fauna; deer, “ spectacled bear ”, “tigrillos” (small tigers) and wild boars may be spotted. Observation of larger wildlife requires several days and a guide. With some luck, the animals seen in the area include porcupines, “coatis”, “añujes”, “majáz”, squirrels, armadillos, “macheteros”, monkeys, “carachupas”, frogs and reptiles. The use of binoculars and patience is encouraged.
Fifty-nine species of birds have been identified in the area, but one of its main attractions takes place at the Dancing Spot of the Little Rooster of the Rocks, where the males of this rare, protected bird, dance to attract their females. This exciting “show of nature” takes place after a 20- minute walk and can be seen daily, between 3-5 p.m.
Beautiful butterflies of bright colors and unexpected sizes will also dance before your eyes – they are worthy ambassadors of the insect world of the jungle. The scientist-guest may discover new species of insects and observe numerous molluscs abounding in the area; some may even want to investigate microorganisms. Pampa Hermosa is home to the amphibious (frogs, toads) and to reptiles of specific interest to science - researchers have recently identified some rare species. The predominant amphibious creatures in the area are: Eleutherodactylus, Gastrotheca and Hyalinobatrachium.

PAMPA HERMOSA is located at the base of the Reserve, offers a treasure of virgin flora, including a wide variety of orchids, some of which have not yet been classified. Dominant among the cedars is “Abuelo” (Grandfather), the largest in Latin America, estimated to be 600 years old; it cannot be embraced by less than 16 persons holding hands together. Scientists and specialists can review lists of local flora and fauna in a report made by a team of four scientists during their April 21, 2001 trip to the Reserve.
