The Path Of The Hummingbird

A paradise for nature lovers, Peru is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth - thanks to the Andes mountains and its location just south of the Equator - with an incredible 84 of the world's 104 ecosystems represented within its borders. More than 1800 bird species have been registered in Peru. Among the most well-known are: condors, grebes, swifts, the cock-of-the-rock, quetzals, hummingbirds, toucanets, wrens and antbirds.

Detailed Itinerary

1th day: LIMA - CUSCO (Free Day)

Flight Lima-Cusco, reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel. Free day for acclimatizing (3300 m) and optional visits. Afternoon briefing about the tour and overnight in Cusco.

2nd day: CUSCO - HUACARPAY - PILLAHUATA

An early morning start for our bus journey to dry forest habitat of Huacarpay lake, about 30 minutes from Cusco, to observe the birds of the area. With luck we can observe the endemic hummingbird of the region:Oreonynpha nobilis. After our activities we will enjoy an outdoor breakfast.
We continue along rural roads, through fields of quinoa, corn, potatoes and beans, visiting the pre-Inca cemetery of Ninamarka and a couple of traditional communities.
In the afternoon we arrive at Acjanacu Pass (3800 m), which is part of the eastern mountain range, from where we can enjoy fantastic views over the Peruvian rainforest. We camp in Pillahuata, where it is possible to observe tanagers, hummingbirds, cotingas and jays.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

3rd day: PiLLAHUATA - TAMBO PAITITI

Pillahuata is located in the cloudforest and is an excellent place for birdwatching. We get up early and after a delicious breakfast we go deeper into the cloudforest, partly on foot. The area's many ecological niches, make birdwatching extremely interesting. With luck we will spot a black chestnut Eagle (Oreatus Isidori).
We arrive at Tambo Paititi Lodge, which is close to a cock-of-the-rock lek (Rupicola peruviana). In the late afternoon we can take a relaxing bath in the nearby creek and explore the forest around the lodge in search of nocturnal species.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.



 

THE PROGRAM INCLUDES:

- Accommodations: 03 nights hotel (double rooms), 02 nights camping (double tents) and 02 nights lodge (shared rooms)

- Tours: as mentioned incl. private transport, bilingual guide (specialized in birdwatching) and entrance fees

- Included Meals: 07 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 4 dinners

4th day: TAMBO PAITITI

In the early morning we visit the nearby platform from where we can observe the colorful mating dance of the cock-of-the-rock. After a delicious breakfast we travel to Unión to observe jays and tanagers (weather permitting). Overnight in the lodge.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

5th day: TAMBO PAITITI - OLLANTAYTAMBO

Optional dawn activities. After breakfast we board our private transport for a long, panoramic drive to Ollantaytambo (through the Sacred Valley of the Incas). On the way we stop at the colonial village of Pisac where we visit its colorful handicraft market and have some free time to visit this beautiful place and enjoy lunch. Late afternoon we arrive at the unique village of Ollantaytambo, often described as a living museum, for the descendants of the Incas continue to live in the houses built by their ancestors. Overnight in Ollantaytambo.
Meals included: Breakfast.

6th day: OLLANTAYTAMBO - MALAGA - SAN LUIS

Early morning bus ride to the Málaga Pass, in the Eastern Andes at 4300 m, and surrounded by glaciers. Here we visit a native Polylepis forest (Q'euñas), inhabited by several endemic species in danger of extinction.
After birdwatching for a couple of hours we continue towards the little agricultural village of San Luis where avocado, papaya and cacao are cultivated. There is a great deal of bird activity throughout the entire day in this cloudforest region. We camp close to the village.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

7th day: SAN LUIS-CUZCO

An early morning walk in search of endemic birds and visit to the agricultural fields of the locals. After a late breakfast we begin our scenic bus ride to Cusco. Afternoon free for optional visits or shopping and overnight in Cusco.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

8th day: CUzCO-LIMA

Transfer Htl-Apt. for national flight and international connections.
Meals included: Breakfast.
