This program is one of the best samples of living and eco tourism offered in South America. In addition to visit the most interesting places from the tourist point of view, the participants take part actively in the preservation and sustainable development tasks.

Detailed Itinerary

1st day: RECEPTION AND TRANSFER TO WASAI MALDONADO LODGE.

After having drunk a delicious fruit juice and accommodated in the bungalows, you will receive an explanation about the tour. After lunch, afternoon free to visit the cheerful Puerto Maldonado city and do the last minute shopping. Before to start the guided tour, you may rent the popular mototricycles paying US$6 per hour with driver and capacity for two passengers in order to visit the surroundings of the city. Motocycles and bikes can also be rented paying US$ 2 per hour. At 4 o’clock, guided visit to “la cachuela” in order to get contact with the rural life of the amazon, the ecology and the agriculture. Opportunity to watch the surrounding fauna of Puerto Maldonado. At night, diner and overnight at Wasai Maldonado Lodge.
Meals included: Lunch and diner.

2nd day:          SHIPMENT AND TRANSFER FOR 3 ½ HOURS APPROXIMATELY ALONG TAMBOPATA RIVER UNTIL WASAI TAMBOPATA LODGE & RESEARCH CENTER (LUNCH IN THE ROAD).

Along the road we will watch the settlers farms, different species of birds, capibaras, the biggest rodents in the world, water turtles and other animals. Reception, accomodation at the lodge and Lunch. Explanation about the lodge. After a short rest, we will visit the surrounding forest. After the diner we will visit the forest by night in order to watch and listen insects, bats, frogs and maybe another occasional encounter with other night mammals. Overnight at the lodge. The different sounds of the forest will accompany our first night at the jungle.

3rd day: THE EXOTIC BIRDS’ SONG
WILL WAKE UP US.

After breakfast we will make orientation walks in order to know the road network nearby the lodge. In the afternoon, we will receive practical lessons of survival techniques in the jungle. At night, boat drive along the river in order to watch the night fauna.
Meals included: Breakfast

4th day:   VISIT TO THE COMMUNITY

Interaction with the population, activities of the voluntary support project (palm leaves weaving or other activities developed by the population in that moment).

5th day: ACTIVITIES OF THE VOLUNTARY SUPPORT PROJECT

(to choose among social activities with the community families, or scientific activities supporting the preservation tasks of the reintroduction project of native fishes and river wolves).

6th day:  COLLPA OF RIO GATO PARROTS

Before the sunrise, we will cross Tambopata river in order to watch hundred of parakeets and parrots at rio gato shore, eating mineral salts from a clay wall. Along the road it is possible to find groups of monkeys and other animals. You can also watch interesting plants and bugs. After breakfast you can rest in the beautiful surroundings of the lodge, fish or swim in the river or in the pretty cascades of Gato River.Activities of the voluntary support project (monitoring of fauna and collection of new specimens for the interpretation center).

7th day:  Activities of the voluntary support project

(census of day mammals. By nights, night vertebrates).

8th day: ACTIVITIES of the voluntary support project, census of fishes and fauna of the swamp near the Lodge, support to build the shelter and research center.

In the afternoon we will start our trip of 1 hour 30 minutes upstream until Bahuaja Sonene National Park.
The Journey means an excellent opportunity to watch birds and animals such as capibara, jaguars, turtles, caimans. Late in the afternoon we will arrive to Ccollpa de Chunchos, where we will establish our camp in the shore of the river. We will watch the sunset and you can swim at the river, or if you prefer you can fish some examples of the wide water fauna. By night, we will try to watch some night mammals and amphibious that visit the Ccollpa, also to eat clay or hunt some preys.
Overnight in tents at the macaws’ collpa.

9th day: THE SOUND OF THE HOWLING MONKEYS AT DAWN WILL WAKE UP US  

Hundred of parakeets will fly through the red sky of the morning. We will watch the different species of macaws, parrots and parakeets that join to eat the mineral salts in the clay walls at the river shore. This spectacle only lasts a few hours in the morning. We will take a very simple breakfast in the beach followed by a short walk along the forest looking for birds and animals.
After the walk we will return to the lodge, sailing downstream at Tambopata river. We will arrive there short before lunch. In the afternoon you can take a walk, rest in a lawn chair, fish, swim or visit the local community. After the diner we will sail to see closely the caimans around the lodge.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Diner.

10th day: ACTIVITIES OF THE VOLUNTARY SUPPORT PROJECT.

11th day:  ENCOUNTER WITH A SHAMAN, etnobotany. During the day, an expert will explain us the use of medical plants and In the evening, optional ayahuasca rite.

12th day:  MORNING FREE AND IN THE AFTERNOON JOURNEY TO TRES CHIMBADAS LAKE

After breakfast we will travel downstream to the native locality Ese ‘Eja where Tres Chimbadas lake is located, lodged by natives of Ese 'Eja, ethnos until to arrive to the 2.5 Kms road to enter to Tres Chimbadas Lake. Upon arrival to the lake, we will begin with the activities of the tour, we will spend the day exploring its shores, in guided walks by paths inside the forest and sailing by the lake. Lunch at the lodge. This lake offers the best possibilities to watch giant river otters, show fish of piranhas  In the evening, search of caimans. Overnight at the lodge.
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch.

13th day:  TRES CHIMBADAS LAKE.

Very early, we leave for sailing and appreciate the morning noise searching for new contacts with the local fauna. After the last walk, we return by motor boat to Puerto Maldonado. Lunch and rest of the afternoon free for shopping or rest around the hotel pool at the shores of Madre de Dios river.
Included Meals: Lunch.

14th day: SANDOVAL LAKE VERY EARLY 5 AM.

After breakfast, we will begin our half an hour travel along Madre de Dios river towards Sandoval Lake. To arrive there we walk by a road inside the forest during 3.5 km approximately until the lake shore, where the journey continues by boat. We will enjoy the unique beauty of Sandoval lake and luckily we will see again a giant otters family that lives in the lake, as well as the rich and permanent fauna of exotic birds, monkeys and amphibians. Lunch and relax. In the afternoon we will return to Puerto Maldonado by boat. Farewell diner and overnight at Puerto Maldonado.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Diner.

15th day:   

Breakfast and morning free until the time of the transfer to the airport.

ACTIVITIES

We describe here some examples of the activities offered by us:

a. Introduction to the ecology and adaptation of plants to survive in the Amazon tropical forest. We will make an introductory walk to the forest in order to learn the structure, dynamics and adaptations of flora and fauna.

b. Night Ecology. It will include a short night walk in the forest to experience the difference between the forest life night and day. We will introduce you to the biotic and abiotic factors that affect the night fauna behavior.

c. Census of Vertebrates in the tropical forest. We will combine many kinds of methods of field valuation in order to take a census of birds and mammal species.

d. The Arthropod World. It is an introduction to the amazing world of million of species of insects, spiders and other living bugs in the tropical forest. The participants will learn about the special adaptations used by the arthropods in order to survive

e. Flying night vertebrates of the rainy tropical forest. We will take a census of night birds (owls, chotacabras, and other night birds of prey). Different bat species will be caught using transects and fine nets special for birds.

f. The Collpas. We will visit these clay formations with mineral salts that join a considerable fauna, specially parrots, macaws and mammals. We will watch their peculiar behavior and we will learn its importance.

g. The Forest People. We will visit the local people in order to learn how they get accustomed to the forest life.

h. The botany of the tropical rainy forest. This is an special activity that covers the general ecology and the special adaptations of plants. We will learn its medicine use

i. Census of water vertebrates. We will take a night drive by boat along the rivers or lakes in order to evaluate the caimans and frogs species along with their chorus.

j. Etnobotany, A local peasant or shaman will show us the healing properties and the different uses of the amazon plants.

k. Recreation Activities: We will travel by boat through lakes and little rivers, fishing, swimming at the cat’s cascades, visit to Puerto Maldonado bars and discos. Purchase of handicrafts.

l. Mysticism; The participants may take part in a ritual to drink Ayahuasca or Santo Daime, the sacred jungle plant used to heal different physical and spiritual diseases. At the end of the trip you will have a good level of knowledge about the amazon world and you will understand better the need to protect this fragile ecosystem.
